In the 2015 - 2016 Academic Decathalon class we will study the recent history, economics, art, music, literature and ecology of modern India. We will take a truly cross-disciplinary study of the nation, integrating the history and culture into the context of the environment and the political geography. The course will include a socio-economic and mathematic component as well, including the study of the economics of modern India, as well as brief treatment of statistics and combinatorial mathematics. The literary selection Nectar In a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya will tie together many of the concepts throughout the year. Additionally, we will teach essay writing, speech and interview skills both in the context of the academic material and in the context of personal development. Lastly, students will create, relate and evaluate works of Art and Music relating to India and its history. Students in grades 9 - 12 who participate in this class may be eligible to compete on the 2016 Academic Decathalon team which will compete on both a regional and national level.
