Course Description:

USAD provides students of all learning levels the opportunity to excel academically through team competition.† The Academic Decathlon is a team competition where students match their intellects with students from other schools.† Students are tested in ten categories:† Art; economics; essay; interview; language and literature; mathematics; music; science; social science and speech.

†Course Objectives:

This course will use the theme and texts provided by Academic Decathlon to develop students? skills in reading and analyzing both literature and informational text. Students will compose multiple written compositions throughout the course. Students will meet the Arizona State Standards in Reading; Writing; Language; and Speaking and Listening.†

1. Students will explore the theme of USAD and the related materials.

2. Students will read and analyze non-fiction and fiction texts related to the theme.†

3. Students will compose written pieces that are informative; argumentative; and narrative.

4. Students will prepare and present multi-media presentations.

5. Students will be prepared to compete in mock and official competitions.
