By studying diverse African American voices from the early 17th Century to Modern times, this course will provide students with a historical and thematic perspective on outstanding literary works by African-Americans. Selected genres include (but are not limited to) poems, speeches, short stories, plays, novels, autobiographies, and essays. Students will become aware of a writer’s style and rationale for a given work, exploring texts from various perspectives. It is hoped that, through exposure to authors whose ideas and values reflect diverse backgrounds, students will appreciate the differences as well as the similarities among all people.
