Course description

Applied Biological Systems is an inquiry-based course that focuses on the study of fundamental biological concepts and their practical applications in real-world, agricultural scenarios. Topics covered include plant growth and production, soils, energy, water, sustainable agriculture, farm-to-table agriculture production, beginning welding, cell biology, mendelian genetics, evolution, and animal growth and development. An emphasis will also be placed on the FFA organization, leadership fundamentals, and public speaking. Students will receive fifty percent classroom and fifty percent laboratory instruction, be members of the FFA, and have and actively maintain a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Program. Students who complete this course with a satisfactory grade can earn one CTE credit or one credit of Biology that counts towards university entrance requirements. Students will engage in laboratory experiments fifty percent of the time (approximately 1 to 3 hours per week). Laboratory exercises include but are not limited to the following: Gardening Labs - Soil preparation, planting, weed identification and removal, plant harvesting pH measurement - How does pH affect Nutrient Uptake and Plant Growth? Nutrient Measurement and Application to Soils Lab Plant Germination Lab- germination conditions Plant Parts Dissection Lab Flower Dissection Lab Asexual Plant Propagation Lab Sexual Plant Propagation Lab Population Density Lab - Tragedy of the Commons Water Cycle Lab Solar Energy Lab Butter Lab - Farm-to-Table Ice Cream Lab - Farm-to-Table Fusion Lab Stages of Matter Lab Osmosis and Diffusion Lab Microscope Exploration Lab Plant vs. Animal Cells Lab Mitosis and Meiosis of Cells Lab Egg Dissection Lab Chick Incubation Lab - includes monitoring of temps, humidity, and candling to monitor growth Punnet Squares and Genetic Diversity Lab - corn Selective Breeding of Animals Lab Comparative Anatomy and Evolutionary Adaptations Lab
