Course description

Students will evaluate the role of art in history and culture through interpretation and analysis of significant works of art and architecture from Prehistory through the 16th century. Students will investigate the theoretical justification and practical production of art in multiple societal contexts; considering traditional forms and conventions of representation; symbology; and contrast.

The course introduces the methodologies of art history; criticism; the study of the media; and techniques used by artists from various cultures and time periods. This study of criticism includes how to apply appropriate terminology in verbal and written analyses. Students will compare works across time and cultures to develop an understanding of; and respect for; the visual arts as a chronicle of history; cultural heritage; and the human experience.

This course allows students to reflect on how art was and is used as a vehicle to depict political and religious propaganda and serve as evidence of cultural shifts and changes. Students will use critical thinking to contemplate the connection between art and context through reflective writing assessments and Discussion-Based Assessments.

Students will collaboratively produce works to synthesize their understanding of art?s role in history and culture.
