Course title

Calligraphy A-B

Pre-requisite

None

Course description

The purpose of calligraphy is to create beautiful and decorative words that can be used on anything from letters or postcards to handwritten signs. Students can bring these skills into the classroom for projects, thank-you notes, or gifts for family and friends. The possibilities are endless. Students do not need good penmanship or art skills to participate in this course. Because calligraphy is a learned skill, students will be able to feel successful and accomplished when completing this course. When we can construct final products, we will reach out to different local community centers (such as nursing homes or children's wards of the hospital) and submit work to them, thereby also teaching the students about community service and giving back. Course Outline: In this course, students will 1. learn the history of calligraphy and the proper posture, tools, and supplies necessary for this art form 2. practice introductory strokes and hand movements necessary to form letters 3. construct these strokes together to form letters and numbers 4. illustrate how those letters and numbers form words and phrases 5. create phrases, words, and sayings on paper or other media with proper spacing and positioning 6. develop wonderful art and sample pieces by the end of each semester
