Course description

We use Exploring Creation with Chemistry by Dr. Jay Wile which provides a serious study of chemistry while remaining very home-school friendly. In addition, the student also reads The Mystery of the Periodic Table by Benjamin Wiker and The Chemical History of a Candle by Michael Faraday as supplemental texts. Apologia also provides a Solutions and Tests Manual for the main text in addition to the study questions throughout the book. The Chemistry Syllabus has a day-by-day breakdown of this course along with paper topics and a variety of teaching resources including Twelfth Grade Subject Rubrics, Learning Objectives, and grading charts. This is a 1 year, 1 credit course. This course is a high school chemistry course and gives the student a rigorous foundation in chemistry, in order to prepare him or her for a college-level course. The course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university chemistry course. The course includes in-person Chemistry labs. The syllabus also contains optional lab assignments which the student may complete for an additional ½ credit of Chemistry Lab. Student must do real, in-person (not virtual) labs. There are two ways in which a separate (1/2 credit maximum) Chemistry Lab can be earned. 1) Student may do 18 minimum labs, writing up each one of them. This has been deemed to be equivalent to 1/2 credit. OR 2) Student may do more than 18 labs, and maintain a log of hours, completing at least one lab write-up, so that the combination of labs + lab-write-ups consists of a minimum of 60 hours.
