Course description

Chemistry in the Earth System 1-2 is a laboratory-based college preparatory science course; which will focus on major principles and concepts of chemistry.† This course integrates the high school Physical Science (PS); Earth and Space Science (ESS); and Engineering; Technology; and Applications of Science (ETS) Performance Expectations (PE) and Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs)†from the California Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The course is broken down into four learning segments; spanning content from Chemistry to Earth Science. Students encounter Chemistry through real-world phenomena to heighten relevance and to emphasize that chemical laws are used to describe; explain; and make predictions about all matter. Students will study physical chemistry; thermodynamics; equilibrium; stoichiometry; kinetics; atomic structure and chemical bonding; and acid/base.† This course has been approved to meet the University of California (D) Lab Science; Chemistry/Earth & Space Sciences and PUSD Physical Science graduation requirement.
