Course title

Chemistry (Honors/Pre-AP)

Pre-requisite

Successful completion of Algebra 1 AND Honors Physics 1 OR basic Physics 1 AND the WHA Chemistry Readiness course

Course description

This is an accelerated first-year chemistry course designed for students who have demonstrated an aptitude and enthusiasm for studying science. It will provide students with an understanding of the properties of, and interactions between, different types of matter. Students will understand fundamental concepts concerning atoms, elements, and compounds. They will also comprehend the trends within the periodic table and how the atomic structure of elements affects their physical, chemical, and bonding properties. After this foundation, chemical reactions and equations will be explored, as well as thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, and electrochemistry. The course will conclude with a brief survey of nuclear and organic chemistry. Throughout the course, students will get hands-on laboratory experience by performing experiments designed to be successfully accomplished at home. Topics include: fundamental concepts concerning atoms, elements and compounds; trends within the periodic table and how the atomic structure of elements affects their physical, chemical and bonding properties; chemical reactions and equations; gas laws, acids and bases, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium and electrochemistry, as well as a brief survey of nuclear chemistry. Students typically spend 1-2 hours a week participating in wetlabs. List of wetlabs: 2, 4, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 Measuring physical properties Separation of components in a mixture Determining the empirical formula of a copper chloride hydrate Activity series Limiting reactant and percent yield Intermolecular forces Molarity Mole amount of a gas Metathesis reactions Acid-base titration Rate Law determination for the acid-catalyzed iodination of acetone Titration curves and Ka
