Course description

Creative Expression is a fine arts class that explores the variety of ways human beings have used language to communicate. This will include substantial work in poetry where students will explore and write poems in a wide variety of forms (haiku, sonnets, ghazal, sestina, villanelle, free verse, narrative, concrete, erasure/blackout, pantoum, etc.). Poems will also be performed orally and students will learn a variety of oral strategies for producing meaningful readings. The course will also explore other forms of oral performance including dramatic monologues, improvisational theater, storytelling, and joke-telling. A major part of the course will be dedicated to narrative: primarily short story writing. Throughout students will be learning to use language in ways that are expressive, meaningful, and powerful.
