Course description

This is an introductory course in the art of creative writing in various modes of prose; poetry; and drama. As part of the course; students learn about the history of creative writing as they read and analyze short works from classic and contemporary writers; such as John Steinbeck; Ray Bradbury; Ernest Hemingway; Bram Stoker; Douglas Adams; Kate Chopin; and William Shakespeare. Students also study theory of creative writing; by reading articles and essays on craft; focusing on scene; characterization; plotting; point of view; and dialogue. Finally; throughout the course; students create and perform their own original works of poetry; prose; and drama while also critiquing the work of their classmates.
