In this course, students will examine the graphic novel as a sophisticated literary form, with particular attention to its historical, political, and cultural implications. The course emphasizes how graphic narratives operate through distinct modes of reading that integrate visual and textual literacy, expanding access to complex ideas while also shaping interpretation in unique ways. Students will investigate the graphic novel’s engagement with moments of historical tension and crisis, analyzing how these works respond to, represent, and intervene in contested histories. Additionally, the course traces the evolving critical discourse surrounding graphic novels, considering how shifts in language, reception, and academic legitimacy have reshaped their place within the literary canon.
