English Seminar: "Ghosted" - A Social, Cultural, and Linguistic Phenomenon Across Time and Place

Pre-requisite

None

Course description

Over time, the word "ghost" has managed to convey meanings ranging from spectral beings who inhabit places or haunt people to the intentional disentanglement and disappearance of one party in a relationship. In this seminar, we will explore the history of ghosts through cultural myth and belief, examination of the word itself and its various connotations throughout time, and its portrayal in various forms of media. Investigation into the role that death plays in life and how artists have created in response to the feeling of absence will be necessary to our study as well. We will start by examining early mentions of ghosts in a wide array of cultural myths and stories, study major works that revolve around ghosts, and work toward our current meanings and understandings of the word. This is a writing intensive class that includes analytical essays based on class themes and essential questions, in class analytical essays and creative non-fiction. Grammar and composition are an important part of this English class.
