Course title

English Seminar: Writing in the Margins: Queer Histories

Pre-requisite

None

Course description

This is a literature class which reads queer literature written before 1969, the date of the Stonewall Riots and the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. Recovering queer histories is important because it validates the identity: to show that contrary approaches to gender and sexuality are not a modern trend, but are as old as humanity. “Queer” is being used here as an umbrella term for all LGBTQIA+ identities, although it is clearly anachronistic when applied to people in the distant past. This is a writing-intensive class which includes assigned papers on literary analysis, historical research, and personal memoir. Grammar and composition will be taught through and alongside student writing.
