Course title
Financial AlgebraPre-requisite
Algebra 1 and 2Course description
Financial Algebra is heavily based on the concepts and techniques taught in Algebra 2, incorporating many of the same mathematical principles but applied to real-world financial situations. In both Algebra 2 and Financial Algebra, students work with linear equations, inequalities, functions, and systems of equations, which are essential for understanding how financial models operate. For example, in Financial Algebra, the concept of exponential growth, which is heavily emphasized in Algebra 2, is used to model compound interest and investment growth. Additionally, students apply skills in manipulating polynomials and rational expressions, which are central to solving problems involving debt amortization, car loans, and mortgages. Financial Algebra also heavily incorporates quadratic equations, a major topic in Algebra 2, to calculate things like the break-even point in business scenarios or to model the return on investment in various financial plans. The use of functions to represent and analyze real-world situations, such as revenue, cost, and profit models, builds on the function concepts introduced in Algebra 2. Furthermore, topics like systems of equations and matrices are often employed to solve multi-variable financial problems, such as budgeting for multiple expenses or optimizing financial outcomes, closely paralleling the more advanced topics in Algebra 2. Ultimately, Financial Algebra takes the foundational algebraic skills learned in Algebra 2 and applies them to practical, real-world financial situations, making it a direct extension of the higher-level mathematical concepts introduced in that curriculum. At Kentridge High School, I strive to help my students recognize the connections between these algebraic skills and their everyday financial decision-making, empowering them with the tools they need to succeed both academically and in their personal finances.
