Course title

Forensic Science

Pre-requisite

Biology; Chemistry

Course description

Fingerprints. Blood spatter. DNA analysis. The world of law enforcement is increasingly making use of the techniques and knowledge from the sciences to better understand the crimes that are committed and to catch those individuals responsible for the crimes. Forensic science applies scientific knowledge previously learned in Biology and Chemistry to the criminal justice system. This course focuses on some of the techniques and practices used by forensic scientists during a crime scene investigation (CSI). Starting with how clues and data are recorded and preserved; the student will follow evidence trails until the CSI goes to trial; examining how various elements of the crime scene are analyzed and processed. Each unit includes wet-lab; forensic science experiments that bring the principles of biology and chemistry to life as integrated in the work of forensic scientists. At the culmination of each semester; students will complete a major project that demonstrates through writing and presentation skills the learning of scientific principles of forensic science.

Course work each week: 5 hours

2-3 hours of instruction and background

1-2 hours of hands-on or virtual interactivities

Each unit contains a multi-day laboratory assignment with intensive lab report.

Each semester concludes with a major project.
