Course description

This course will explore the musical styles from which rock and roll was formed, how it took shape through the 1950s-1960s and developed through the 1970s and beyond. Students will develop a musical understanding of the history of rock and roll music and a greater awareness of its musical and cultural significance within its time period. An emphasis will be placed on the music itself and listening. Students will listen critically to important rock-era music and examine the theory of the style from different decades and various sub-genres of rock music. No musical training is required, but students should have an interest in rock and roll, an openness to hear new musical styles and a desire to learn more about this genre of music. Students may take this course multiple years for credit. Can be taken 9-12.
