Algebra 1/2 (first year of HS math)Course description
Honors Geometry 1 is the first semester of second-year high school math. Honors Geometry 1 helps students to use logic and critical thinking in solving problems involving angles and a variety of shapes. An emphasis is placed on the comparison of different angles and shapes and describing the relationships observed. Students will also use a compass and straightedge to demonstrate properties described in the lessons and to construct various shapes. In this Honors course; students will complete challenging problems and discovery activities to elevate their learning. This course is driven by and aligned to the Common Core standards.
Through completion of this course; the students will:
Use conditional statements to produce a logical argument.
Be able to measure segments and angles and apply algebra to these measurements.
Understand the relationships of angles formed by parallel lines and a transversal.
Be able to prove that two triangles are congruent and use the definition of congruence to draw conclusions.
Observe and apply the relationships found within triangles.
Use the properties of parallel lines and triangles to make observations about polygons and quadrilaterals.
Use the coordinate plane to prove and describe properties about lines; triangles and quadrilaterals.
Use a compass and straightedge to construct parallel and perpendicular lines and observe the implications for their angles.
