Course description

This course is for students who already possess knowledge of basic mathematical concepts; and who are equipped with the skills needed to apply simple mathematical techniques correctly. The majority of these students will expect to need a sound mathematical background as they prepare for future studies in subjects such as chemistry; economics; psychology and business administration. The course focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques. It will introduce students to these concepts in a comprehensible and coherent way and help the student to apply the mathematical knowledge they have acquired to solve realistic problems that are set in an appropriate context.
The topics covered:
I. Algebra
II. Functions and equations
III. Circular functions and trigonometry
IV. Vectors
V. Statistics and probability
VI. Calculus
VII. Mathematical exploration
The internal assessment in mathematics is an individual exploration. This is a piece of written work that involves investigating an area of mathematics.
I. External Assessment (3 hour) 80% of assessment The external assessment is the exam taken by the student in May. It is taken at the school and sent out to examiners for grading.
Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes) 40%
Section A -consists of compulsory short-response questions based on the syllabus.
Section B- consist of compulsory extended –response questions based on the syllabus.

Section A --consists of compulsory short-response questions based on the syllabus.
Section B- consist of compulsory extended –response questions based on the syllabus

II. Internal Assessment 20% of assessment
This component is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB at the end of the course.

III. Mathematical exploration
Internal assessment in mathematics SL is an individual exploration. This is a piece of written work that involves investigating an area of mathematics.
IB Math SL will use the Math SL Guide as their resource for instruction. The recommended textbook for Math SL is :
