Interior Design and Merchandising Fundamentals (1-2)

Grades: 9-12

This course will develop an awareness of housing needs, choices available and the decisions faced when selecting and furnishing a home. Each student will design and decorate their “dream home”

As a student in this class you will
· Examine trends in housing
· Interpret blueprints and floor plans
· Demonstrate basic drawing of floor plans and elevation views
· Identify the elements and principles of design
· Apply the elements and principles of design to their projects
· Demonstrate an understanding of the color principles in design
Identify art periods and design styles
Identify Architect and architecture
· Examine furniture styles
· Students will create a living space using elements and principles of design
· Simulate selecting, buying, selling, promoting and displaying interior products and designs.

Interior Design and Merchandising 3-4
JDM211/JDM212
Prerequisite: A “C” or better in Design and Merchandising Fundamentals
Grades: 10-12

This course will reinforce the skills and techniques learned Design and Merchandising Fundamentals/Interior Design. You will also use your skills to create aesthetically pleasing and functional design for residential and commercial space. Projects will include redesigning space on campus.

As a student in this class you will:
· Draw floor plans
· Utilize computer aided design
· Apply the elements and principles of design to residential and commercial design projects
· Demonstrate an understanding of the color principles in design
· Assess the elements and principles of design used in textile design
· Compare art periods and design styles
· Select and arrange furniture
· Examine materials, furnishings, and lighting
· Prepare color board and other visual presentations using elements and principles of design
· Identify need for Universal Design
· Simulate marketing, promotion, display, selection, and buying as well as sales.

Interior Design and Merchandising 5-6

Prerequisite: A “C” or better in Design and Merchandising 3-4
Grades: 11-12

This course will build upon the skills and techniques learned Interior Design and Merchandising Fundamentals and Interior Design and Merchandising 3-4. You will also use your skills to create aesthetically pleasing and functional design for residential and commercial space. Projects will include redesigning space on campus.

As a student in this class you will:
· Review and utilize skills from previous course
· Further evaluate textiles, materials and products used in commercial and residential design
· Examine the retail aspect of design
· Prepare color boards and other visual presentations.
· Internship and job shadow opportunities will be available
