Intro to Life SciencePre-requisite
N/ACourse description
Course Description:†
Introduction to Life Science is a Lab Science course that is designed to prepare 9th graders for science courses at Bisbee High School. Through laboratory exercises and classroom experiences; the students will demonstrate an appreciation of life phenomena and the diversity of living organisms.†
This course will cover 2-3 distinct science units (with a focus on the biological and life sciences); as well as an introductory unit on critical thinking; problem solving; reasoning; and other fundamental scientific and research skills. The sciences to be covered in this course may include biology (Major classifications of life; how organisms acquire and use energy; and a general discussion on the forms of reproduction); ecology (niches in local ecosystems; the role of the non-living environment in reproductive success; migration and the effect of location on species); and genetics (mendelian genetics; traits in humans; application and ethics of genetics in modern society).
Course Objectives:
Life Science is the study of living things and their vital processes. This class is intended as an introduction to the basics of Biology: Scientific Method; Anatomy and Physiology; the study of cells; evolution; genetics and ecology. This subject uses a variety of learning techniques.
Labs:
Each major unit (approximately every two weeks) will culminate in at least one major lab and may include ?mini-labs? throughout (lab time averaging 1 hour per week). Examples below are non-exhaustive and may be substituted or added to as needed. Major Labs will each require approximately 1-2 (55 minute) class periods of hands-on activity in the lab followed by a lab report (see ?Coursework and Grading? below). It is imperative that students pass the Lab Safety Exam as soon as possible in the school year so that they may safely participate in all labs; which are a major portion of the course.
