Literature will introduce the most important skills involved in reading a wide variety of written materials efficiently and effectively. You'll cover short stories and focus on the process of determining the use of plot; conflict; setting; and symbolism in short pieces of writing. It will introduce students to the concepts of irony; foreshadowing; and allegory. You'll also learn how to read longer pieces of fiction using the same elements. You'll read and analyze different types of informational writing including essays; memoirs; and speeches. You'll also study primary elements used in drama; plus study the impact and significance of William Shakespeare.
Course ObjectivesBy the end of this course; you'll be able to
- Define the short story genre of literature
- Identify elements of a short story while reading literature
- Define the novel genre of literature
- List the basic elements of poetry
- Identify advanced poetical devices and forms
- Define the nonfiction genre of literature
- Define the drama genre of literature
