This year long course is designed to promote reasoning, problem-solving, and modeling through thematic units focused on mathematical practices while reinforcing and extending content in Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Statistics and Probability, and Geometry. By the end of the course students will be able to:
• Analyze the various parts of an earnings statements or paycheck. • Describe income tax and other types of taxes, including sales tax on purchases. • Identify financial considerations when buying a house or renting an apartment. • Calculate the total monthly cost of owning a home. • Identify financial considerations when buying or leasing a car. • Explore different types of personal investments. • Identify various terms associated with borrowing money. • Learn about the difference between simple and compound interest. • Describe the importance of securing different types of insurance. • Plot graphs and recognize relationships in data. • Apply Newton’s second law of motion to solve real-world problems. • Interpret quadratic relationships, graph linear functions to show end behavior, and use exponential equations and inequalities to solve problems.
