Course title

Oceanography

Pre-requisite

C or higher in Biology and Chemistry

Course description

Students will develop a basic understanding of Oceanography, the study of Earth’s oceans. This course will explain waves, tides, currents, and how scientists study the ocean. Students will learn about marine ecosystems, including animal and plant life, their interactions, and how humans are impacting them. Oceanography applies the sciences of biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and meteorology to the Earth’s oceans. Lab activities and applying the scientific method will be incorporated to broaden scientific skills and understanding. Students spend on average 1 hour per week participating in labs. Please view the list below: Semester 1 Labs: Light's effects in water Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics Bathymetry Layers in the Ocean: Temp and Salinity Exploring Ocean Currents Thermoregulation Plastics in the Ocean Oil Spills Albatross Bolus Dissection Ocean Acidification on Shells Squid Dissection Crab Dissection Semester 2 Labs: Sediment Lab Primary Producers Lab Overfishing and Sustainability Activity Bony Fish Dissection Shark Dissection Echinoderm Dissections (sea star, sea urchin and sea cucumber)
