Course title

Post-AP: Literary Genres

Pre-requisite

AP English Language and Composition OR AP English Literature and Composition

Course description

Students will develop their ability to understand and analyze motivations and techniques of writers in various genres and from different cultures and time periods. This course will build on the AP reading and writing skills students have already acquired. The course will be organized around three thematic units: Identity & Culture; Conformity & Rebellion; and War & Peace. Through close reading and frequent writing—including annotations; short writing pieces; and more formal responses—students will continue to develop their ability to analyze and evaluate literature and practice writing conventions. They will consider the social; literary; and historical context of works when interpreting them. Class discussions; including Socratic seminars; will be the foundation for learning and understanding the literature read. Students will also be introduced to various types of literary criticism and will write their own analytical and argumentative essays about literature using one or more of those approaches.
