Course title

Post-AP: Magical Realism

Pre-requisite

AP English Literature & Composition or AP English Language & Composition

Course description

This course is designed to provide deeper insight and appreciation into the literary tradition of Magical Realism and the circumstances surrounding many of the prominent Latin American Boom writers who pioneered it. We will read a selection of novels and short stories which exemplify separate salient characteristics of Magical Realism and discuss the cultural and artistic impact these works have had on other modern works. Works will include One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez;†Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges; and The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende.†Students will have the opportunity to observe how the political tumult and military oppression commonly experienced by Latin Boom writers informed the expressions of their literary style; which cuts against the sympathies of the Romantic tradition--painting a world full of fantastical elements but devoid of heroes or self-justifying moral standards.

In addition to written literary analyses;†students will also craft short fiction stories in the style of the authors they have just read. These projects will undergo a guided writing process which will produce several drafts and pre-writing exercises. Each piece of writing produced in the writing process will be considered in the evaluation of the story and will be graded on Composition; Synthesis of Author?s Style; and Originality.
