Students will read and analyze acclaimed modernist works and discuss what about their form and content makes them modernist; and how they reflect the social and political landscape of the time. Special attention will be paid to the ways that innovative literary practices mediate themes such as the urban experience; war and its aftermath; work and leisure; the rise of consumer capitalism; and the shifting pressures of gender; sexuality; race; ethnicity; and class during the modern era. Students will also be introduced to various types of literary criticism and will write their own analytical and argumentative essays about literature using one or more of those approaches.
