The purpose of this course is to develop skills in linear and quadratic functions, general polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of linear equations, trigonometry, and trigonometric equations.
We will emphasize problem-solving techniques, complemented with diverse resources to help ensure you master concepts in each of these areas. Another learning objective for this course is to demonstrate the ability to apply specific problem-solving steps to solve word problems.
MAT 170 is an adaptive class run in ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces). ALEKS uses adaptive questioning in the form of an Initial Knowledge Check (IKC) to determine exactly what you know and don't know upon entry into the course. ALEKS then instructs you on the topics you are most ready to learn. By the end of the session, you will have learned many Pre-calculus topics across four units. Unit A consists of topics related to algebra and equations. Unit B provides an introduction to graphs and functions. Unit C addresses polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Finally, Unit D covers trigonometry.
