Songwriting and Producing

Pre-requisite

None

Course description

Songwriting and Producing will focus on contemporary music history, songwriting, preforming, and producing. Students will be assigned biographies and books written about, or by, some of the pioneers in the music industry. Assignments such as research projects, group presentations, and light notetaking will occur throughout the year. This course will challenge students to dive into their creative side as they learn about basic song structure, common poetry stanzas, and rudimentary music theory. Students will be assessed on their ability compose a complete song with lyrics each trimester while following the parameters set up for each song assignment. Students are expected to bring their own instruments to class every day as songs will be rehearsed on a regular basis. Performances will take place within the classroom, and participation in a fall and spring concert will be required. Students are required to bring their own laptop, but they do not need to bring their own interface unless they have one. Throughout the year, students will learn how to use a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) to record their own music!
