Course description

Students will study the topics listed below in the context of our natural and created environments here at the Orme School. The objective of this class is to give upper level students a solid foundation and understanding of the integrated nature of systems and science through the lens of sustainability. By the end of this course students should effectively be able to: Analyze their thinking process and understand objective truth. Plan and carry out real time investigations. Analyze and interpret data, understand how and why it is relevant to daily life. Use appropriate mathematics and computational thinking Construct explanations (cause and effect) and design solutions to problems. Engage in an argument from evidence Obtain, evaluate and communicate information to be an effective positive change agent in society. The categories you will be graded on are: Notebook/Participation Quizzes Tests Projects/Labs Homework/Readings/Reflection Course topics : Interdisciplinary nature of sustainability Objective Truths Policy and politics Paleoclimatology Milankovitch Cycles Field Guide to The Orme School and Orme Ranch Energy and electricity Sources of electricity, extraction and processing Alternative energy and how people feel about it Biological Evolution: Unity, Diversity, Biomes and Relationships Agriculture and Food production Each student must compete and submit an independent research project on topics such as: Noise pollution levels and weather patterns on the Orme Ranch Habitat of the endangered yellow-billed cuckoo Greenhouse gas emission accounting; Planning for the Implementation of a campus carbon credit program Optimizing wind energy through design and location Agricultural Practices and Food Waste Becoming a Zero Waste Organization through purchasing and community practices Solar potential on various campus buildings Climate Change; Past, Present and Future of The Orme School and Ranch
