Course title

Math

Pre-requisite

Algebra 3-4 (or Algebra II)

Course description

This course prepares students for further studies in mathematics or for work in technical fields. Students learn the six trigonometric functions and demonstrate their use in the identities; inverse functions; radian measures; and special triangles. This course provides students with a background in both circular and periodic trigonometric functions. Its usefulness will be found in upper level math courses as well as several technical fields. Further; it will prepare students for items that will be encountered on college entrance exams and/or placement tests. Depending on the individual test scores; students may earn dual college credit for this course.
(Each campus in the district partners with different MCC's but the course number for dual enrollment is MAT 182)

Statement of Need

The State Board of Education is requiring that the class of 2013 will have to complete 4 year of mathematics in order to graduate. In general; students are encouraged to explore the various branches of mathematics; both pure and applied. Currently; we have limited fourth year math courses that provide both applied and pure mathematical opportunities. We would like to provide math offerings for students who are college bound; however they do not need Pre-calculus or Calculus for their program of study.

Trigonometry allows the students to further their learning beyond Algebra 3-4; and allows for emphasis on trigonometric concepts. As a result of successfully completing this course; students will be able to demonstrate the basic concepts and principles of trigonometry and they will have an understanding of mathematical logic necessary to apply these concepts and principles to problem solving. Students who are pursuing degrees where a trigonometry background is necessary; this course will allow them to pursue further course work in mathematics and other areas in which Trigonometry is a prerequisite. Trigonometry will also prepare students for college entrance exam.
