World History and Geography: Ancient will introduce students to the origins of human societies around the world; as well as how these societies developed over multiple historical periods through 1200 C.E. To handle the wide ranging scope of the course; five themes will serve as a basis for students to make connections among historical developments across different times and places: 1) interaction between humans and the environment; 2) development and interaction of cultures; 3) state building; expansion; and conflict; 4) creation; expansion; and interaction of economic systems; and 5) development andtransformation of social structures. While examining historical content; students will further develop their ability to read; analyze; and articulate interpretations of the past using key historical thinking skills: Contextualization; Causation; Comparison; as well as Change and Continuity over time.  Students in this course will regularly analyze both secondary and primary sources; while engaging in research projects; essay writing; presentations; debates; and a wide range of other classroom activities. Geography skills and analysis are essential to understanding history and participating in the worldaround them; and will be deeply integrated throughout the course.
