Course title

Writing in the Margins: Queer Histories

Pre-requisite

None

Course description

We often date the modern LGBTQ+ movement as starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969. In this class, we will exclusively read queer literature that was written before this date. Recovering queer histories is important because it validates the identity: to show that contrary approaches to gender and sexuality are not a modern trend, but are as old as humanity. "Queer" is being used here as an umbrella term for all LGBTQIA+ identities, although it is clearly anachronistic when applied to people in the distant past.
