Course title

S 635

Pre-requisite

Full Year of Chemistry

Course description

Would you like to synthesize beautiful green; emerald like crystals with iron as one of the reactants? Synthesis and analysis will be two of the precesses we will investigate. We will try many different lab procedures and a variety of analytical processes. We will learn how to take an unknown substance and determine its formula and its structure. There will be frequent use of technology such as the pH; conductivity and temperature probes to study where pollution has negatively affected the environment. The students will become familiar with the use of several instruments; i.e. the spectrophotometer and the gas chromatograph. We will determine the qualities of an efficient electrochemical cell. The students will also work extensively with reactions that can be used for demonstrations in the chemistry classroom.
