This course will engage students in a nationally recognized (from the Center for Civic Education) program that develops a more profound understanding of; and appreciation for the fundamental principles and values of our free society. It focuses on the common core of civic values and concepts that are fundamental to the theory and practice of democratic citizenship in the United States. There is an expectation that students will engage in extracurricular competitions. NOTE: This course meets the graduation requirement for Government and Economics. NOTE: This is a weighted course.
The We The People program enhances students understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy. At the same time; students discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The culminating activity is a simulated congressional hearing in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate; take; and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.
