Course description

This course provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general physics; heavily emphasizing vector analysis. It provides the student with a strong background in units; measurement; one and two-dimensional motion; Newton's laws and their application; gravity; work and energy; momentum; periodic motion; waves; optics; electrostatics; electrodynamics; electrical circuits; and magnetism. Laboratory work and experiments include: Measuring an Object's Acceleration; measuring Average velocity; The Acceleration Due to Gravity Is the Same for All Objects; Determining a Person's Reaction Time; Factors That Affect Air Resistance; Vector Components; Vector Addition; The Two Dimensions of a Rubber and's Flight; Measuring the Horizontal Speed of an Object without a Stopwatch; Inertia; The Frictional Force; Measuring Acceleration in an Elevator; What Causes Rotational Acceleration; Measuring a Coefficient of Static Friction; Centripetal Force; Energy in a Pendulum; Estimating the Work Done by Friction; Egg Drop; Momentum and Energy Conservation; Hooke's Law; The Characteristics of a Mass/spring System; Frequency and Volume of Sound Waves; The Doppler Effect; The Law of Reflection; Real and Virtual Images in a Concave Mirror; Measuring the Index of Refraction of Glass; Attraction and Repulsion; Making and Using an Electroscope; Making a Parallel-Plate Capacitor and Storing Charge; Current and Resistance; Building a Simple Circuit to Turn on a Light Bulb; Series and Parallel Resistors; Oersted's Experiment; and Diamagnetic; Paramagnetic; and Ferromagnetic Compounds.
