Biology, ChemistryCourse description
This course covers both the anatomy and the physiology of the human body's organ systems in detail along with extensive study of cell structure and tissues. The 16 modules; each lasting 2 weeks are as follows:
1. Organizational Overview
2. Histology: The Study of Tissues
3. Skin and Bones: The Integumentary and Skeletal Systems
4. Skeletal System Histology and Movement
5. Muscle Histology and Physiology
6. The Skeletal Muscle System
7. The Nervous System: Neurons and Neuroglia
8. The Central Nervous System
9. The Peripheral Nervous System
10. The Endocrine System
11. The Circulatory System
12. The Lymphatic System
13. The Digestive System
14. The Respiratory System
15. The Urinary System
16. The Reproductive System
The course includes a strong lab component consisting of three types of lab work:
1. Classroom Laboratory Experiments including: Individual Blood-Typing; The Effects of Bicarbonate Buffers; Peripheral Nerve Function in Two-Point Discrimination; Hydroxyapatite in Bone
2. Microscopic Labs including: human lung; human stomach; skin; salivary glands; hair follicle; bone tissue; bone marrow; skeletal muscle; human cerebrum; blood; tonsil; liver; sperm; testis
3. Dissection Labs: Each student has their own fetal pig for dissection throughout the entire course in each of the following units: skeletal; muscle; digestive; respiratory; and visceral organs. In addition; detailed dissections are completed of: sheep heart; cow eye; mammal brain.
The lab work is 35% of the classroom experience.
In addition to the classroom work; textbook; and labs; the students use the Anatomy Coloring Book as a means of reviewing the anatomy. The students are also taken to the local medical school for a human cadaver workshop.
