Course title
MC 10Pre-requisite
BiologyCourse description
This course in a one year program designed to prepare college bound high school students for an education and career in the health care field. It covers both the anatomy and physiology of the human body?s organ systems as well as cell and tissue structure in great detail. There are 15 units incorporated into the course each lasting approximately two weeks. The units are as follows:
1.Body Organization/Tissues
2.Animal Cell
3.Integumentary
4.Skeletal
5.Muscular
6.Blood/Circulatory
7.Cardiovascular
8.Infection Control
9.Digestive
10.Urinary
11.Wellness; Growth; Development
12.Endocrine
13.Nervous
14.Sensory
15.Reproductive
During the body organization unit; the students learn how the body is organized/divided beginning at the cellular level all the way to the level of an organism. During the animal cell unit the students identify every structure in the cell as well as each of their functions and the function of the cell as a whole. They also learn about mitosis/meiosis; DNA replication; and cell mutation. Each body system unit covers the structures that are found in the body system; the functions of the structures; and diseases and disorders that may affect the system.
The course includes a strong lab component consisting of different types of lab work:
Classroom Laboratory Experiments Include:
?Webquests for every unit in which the students use the internet to explore examine and answer questions about the structures.
?Building a 3D model of an animal cell and a neuron and a 2D model of a skeleton
?Body Defense lab in which the students assess the chemical properties of the skin
?Examining the reflex actions of muscles
?Muscle Endurance lab where the students monitor how muscles gain endurance through use overtime by completing a specific exercise for a specific amount of time for 2 weeks.
?Calculating and monitoring heart rate at rest and during exercise
?Spread of a virus (simulates transmission of a communicable disease)
?Reaction of nervous system to stimuli
Microscopic Laboratory Experiments Include: students look at different types of cells under the microscope and answer questions and draw pictures about their observations. The types of cells they observe are as follows:
?Cheek cell
?Human blood
?Bone tissue
?Muscle tissue
?Nerve
?Glands (adrenal; pituitary; thyroid; parathyroid)
?Salivary Glands
?Taste buds
?Stomach
?Smooth Muscle
?Small Intestine
?Pancreas
?Spinal Cord
?Gray Matter of the brain
Dissections Labs: Each student completes a detailed dissection of a sheep heart; cow eye; sheep brain; and sheep kidney
Open Laboratory Experiments: Students complete hands on activities where they hypothesize outcomes; engage in activities which force them to identify and describe actions and functions of body systems; and gain insight of how each structure and body system effects and maintains homeostasis. These include:
?DNA extraction from a strawberry
?Diffusion of substances across the membrane of an egg using hypotonic; hypertonic; and isotonic solutions.
?Hair Lab where students observe properties of various types of hair under a microscope
?Bone lab where students observe the effects of various substances (bleach; water; and vinegar) on a chicken bone and what happens to the structure of the bone when calcium is drawn out of it.
?Individual blood typing
?Effects of antacids on the stomach and how they affect the PH balance.
?Fast food lab where students observe how fast water travels from the mouth to the stomach using a stethoscope and stop watch.
?Cranial nerve lab which gives the students an understanding of the functions of each cranial nerve.
?Sensory Function lab where the students examine taste; smell; touch; vision; hearing; and reflexes.
In addition to the classroom note taking; textbook work and labs; students complete many other classroom activities and must complete a quiz on anatomical diagrams of each system in order to review and clearly understand human anatomy and physiology.
