Course Description:
This course will explore the history of rock and other popular music styles from the early 1900s to present time. Prominent people and musicians from a variety of genres will be covered; as well as sociological; economic and cultural factors that shaped the many styles of popular music. Extensive listening and demonstrations/performances of musicians will help enhance the learning experience. Emphasis is on the development of tools for critical thinking and intelligent listening.

Objectives:
1. Explain important musical and technical terms used in the discussion of popular music
2. Analyze and evaluate how social influences affected the development of popular music and how popular music has influenced our society
3. Analyze basic business aspects (e.g. copyright; royalties; mechanicals; production; and marketing) of popular music
4. Identify technological influences and its impact on popular music
5. Understand the profound impact popular music has had throughout the United States as well as the rest of the world
6. Discuss the historical development of popular music
7. Develop an appreciation for the artistry of all types of popular music
8. Analyze and evaluate a variety of repertoire from the popular music genre
