Biotechnology 1-2 is offered in the following Tempe Union HS District High Schools: Corona del Sol; Desert Vista; Marcos de Niza; McClintock; Mount Pointe; Tempe HS
The Biotechnology 1-2 class has received AZ HS Course Competency approval. However; in further conversation with Susan England of Arizona State University; we have defined the 3 lab science course credit requirement by the state universities for Tempe Union HS students who desire to enroll in the Biotechnology Program. These students will enroll in the Chem-Physics Foundations or Honors Chem-Physics Foundations classes for their first science credit; the Biology or Honors Biology class for their second science credit; and the Biotechnology 1-2 class with a prerequisite of the Biology class for their third science credit. The rationale is that Biology as a prerequisite for Biotechnology will make Biotechnology an advanced lab science and will meet the third science course lab credit requirement.
New Course Description for Biotechnology 1-2:
This course; for students who have successfully completed Biology 1-2 or Honors Biology 1-2; is designed to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of biotechnology; as well as its uses and influence in society. The course will examine the information; the application; and the ethics of a number of technologies. these may include cellular (cloning; stem cells; antibodies); genetic (gene splicing; genomics; electrophoresis); environmental (remote sensing; biohazard remediation); and agricultural topics. It should also prepare students for pursuit of lab technician training or higher educational opportunities in this field.
