Course Description:
This course will explore the history of electronic music from its primitive beginnings in the 1800s to present time. Influential inventors; musicians; and music from the electronic music genre will be covered; as well as sociological; economic and cultural factors that shaped the uses of electronic music. Listening assignments; multimedia demonstrations/performances of musicians and discussion forums will help enhance the learning experience. Students will perform and compose music using a variety of electronic devices. Emphasis is on the development of tools for critical thinking and intelligent listening.

Course Objectives:
1. Explain important musical and technical terms used in the discussion of music and technology
2. Identify technological influences that have impacted the musical culture during the last century
3. Understand and explain the aesthetic; historical; and technical background of electronic music and look at future trends
4. Develop an appreciation for the artistry of all types of electronic music
5. Analyze and evaluate a variety of electronic repertoire
6. Identify and understand the use of non-traditional music notation and compositional techniques
