Course description

In British Literature and Composition; students will continue to analyze substantive; complex expository works within British literature and foundational works of British political philosophy. These include literary nonfiction as well as a variety of genres including stories; poems; plays; and novels. Students will use this literary platform in order to perform a variety of complex reading and writing tasks. Reading analytically; students will develop skills such as identifying the subtleties of an author’s point of view and other ambiguous matters within a text; determining how multiple themes or ideas combine and intertwine to produce a complex narrative or explanation; and evaluating the premises; arguments; and rhetoric present in seminal texts from British history. Writing will require students to synthesize concepts within texts; identify and incorporate sufficient evidence to support inferences; and establish and explain the significance of claims and evidence. Students will use the writing process and writers' workshop strategies consistently; skillfully; and independently; refining established skills while focusing on the thorough development of a sound and fluid essay; concepts include discerning the most powerful organizational structure; identifying appropriate ways to vary syntax; and choosing vocabulary that is relevant and striking. All writing will integrate the rhetorical situation and be void of any trace of plagiarism. Literacy skills will be further refined through application in a collaborative setting; where students interact with an audience through cohesive speaking; listening; and presenting. Through presentation; students will provide clear; concise information such that an audience can follow the presenter's logic and reason; students will also adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks; demonstrating a command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.
