Course description

In English 9; students enrich their proficiency in all areas of communication. Students will examine a wide array of literary genres as well as substantive; complex expository non-fiction. Students will explore texts; building analyses through identifying critical clues in author choices; including points of emphasis and organizational techniques. Reading skills will stress understanding various perspectives and points of view. The development of writing will highlight the use of academic language and the ability to discern various modes of speech or language. Writing will encompass various modes of composition such as summaries; analyses; reports; and research pieces that incorporate increasingly complex; specialized resources. Students will use the writing process and writers' workshop strategies effectively; focusing on clarity and coherence; furthering assertions with well-documented and relevant examples; and incorporating direct citations as well as inferences. All writing will integrate the rhetorical situation and be void of any trace of plagiarism. Literacy skills will be further refined through application in a collaborative setting; where students interact with an audience through cohesive speaking; listening; and presenting.
