Course description

In English 10; English Language Arts Literacy Standards (AZCCRS) are the foundation upon which students continue to build their sophistication in understanding all areas of communication. Students will examine and analyze meanings within a diverse set of literary genres as well as investigate substantive; complex expository works of nonfiction. Students will compare and contrast details within various artistic mediums; analyzing how ideas; themes; and concepts are presented. Reading skills will continue to focus on understanding and analyzing perspectives in the influential foundational documents of the United States in addition to those within pivotal pieces of world literature. In grade 10; writing will expand the scope of student composition to include investigative reports; literary analyses; and research papers that require in-depth analysis and citation of relevant resources that are increasingly complex and specialized. Students will use the writing process and writers' workshop strategies effectively; refining established skills while focusing on establishing and maintaining formal tone; as well as clarifying relationships amongst claims; evidence; and counterclaims. All writing will integrate the rhetorical situation and be void of any trace of plagiarism. Literacy skills will be further refined through application in a collaborative setting; where students interact with an audience through cohesive speaking; listening; and presenting.
