Course description

This course introduces the Communication Media Technologies with an emphasis on Film & TV. Communication skills including verbal; non-verbal as well as written communication will be emphasized. Students will learn to utilize computer applications; capture and manipulate digital images; and film editing software as well as digital video camera operation. Pre-production and planning of the film product from concept to final production will be introduced. Students will analyze; evaluate; and write for broadcast in television and film.

Students will analyze the media industry; its business practices; and its role in the economy by researching the role of the media industry and its impact on society and the economy; investigating the history and evolution of media and emerging technology; and examining the impact of social media on the media industry. Students will screen clips online and from the Annenberg American Cinema series collection which includes clips form the classic Ken Burns documentary “Empire of the Air."
Students produce a project and present (peer review and self-review) to identify trends; discern between innovation and invention and produce a "commercial" for a significant historical invention in the tone of "late breaking news." Students enrolled in this class will be introduced to DAR 103 (Introduction to Digital Arts) which is taught within Film and TV I; II. Students will be introduced to the copyright and fair use from the historical perspective in the unit on writing a film reviews/previews. Students will work on a movie review project called "Warrior We-Views" research using images and quotes and identifying and attributing sources in an oral presentation. All projects given in class will be modeled after industry projects and have a fine arts emphasis on filmmaking.
