Ya’at’eeh! Welcome to Navajo. This class operates on the 4 A’s: Attendance; Attitude; Attention; and Accountability. You are required to come to class prepared and ready to work when the bell rings. Please bring all necessary learning tools (pencils; paper; etc.) so you are prepared. You will be required to acquire a 3 ring binder to create a portfolio for this class. This is to keep track of your learning and paperwork. Please review this syllabus and sign below with a parent/guardian. I am looking forward to a positive and successful school year with you. Course Description:
This course builds a foundation of communication dealing with everyday activities in meaningful cultural contexts and basic grammar. Students learn essential vocabulary; useful expressions; and learn about the Navajo culture. Students must achieve a minimum grade of a C to move on to Navajo III. A minimum amount of time of 15-30 minutes of studying is recommended to succeed in this class.

Course Objectives:
1. To listen and understand spoken Navajo.
2. To communication both in oral and written form in Navajo.
3. To read fluently and with as near native pronunciation as possible.
4. To appreciate and enjoy the customs of the Navajo culture.
Course Textbook:
Dine Bizaad by Irvy Goosen. Recommended supplemental books:
The Oxford Navajo Picture Dictionary. This book is sold at most local bookstores; i.e. NAU Bookstore. This book should cost between $8 used and $18 new.

Grading Scale:
The grading system is based on points and weights. Practice 20%; Performance 30%; Measurement 50% for a total of 100%. For example; if you receive a 40/50; that equals a B or 80%. Homework is considered practice; quizzes are performance and tests are considered measurement.
Assignments: Are due the day after they are assigned.
A = 90% or above Assessment Policy: Final Exam is worth 15% of total
B = 80 - 89% grade.
C = 70 - 79%
D = 60 – 69%
F = 59% and below
