COURSE DESCRIPTION
Drawing; sketching; conceptualization for clients; and preparing storyboards are essential communication skills in a visual world. This introductory drawing course teaches students about rendering spatial relationships; perspective; light; shadow; texture; and forms. This foundational course includes still life; gesture; and perspective drawing as well as lectures; critiques; and discussions. This course does not require that students have an art background. All types of aspiring artists will benefit from the fundamental and techniques taught in this class. Student will provide drawing supplies and paper along with a portfolio to carry them.

STILL LIVE STUDIO CLASS TIME AND IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Throughout this course; you will have in-class studio still life; in-class practice activities; and virtual critiques of each other's work. The work you do in class and your virtual critiques will used to measure your participation in the course and by the requirements established in the attached rubric. Be sure you come to each class with all required course materials so you are prepared to participle in in-class activities. In addition; review the rubric so you have a good understanding of the participation requirements for this course.

Topic 1: Materials; Value Scale and Layout; and Introduction to Perspective Drawing ( 1)
Objectives
• Demonstrate application of a 0 to 10 value scale
• Obtain the appropriate materials needed for this course.

As an artist; you need to ensure a professional level by being prepared for the job at hand. Researching and getting the right materials whether it is paper; pencils; references; software or hardware is part of the job. For this assignment; you need to acquire all of the required course materials as listed in the course materials section in Loud Cloud. Take a picture of your course materials and post it on the classroom wall as well as in the "Course Materials" assignment section. Contact your instructor for any questions regarding the required course materials.

Value Scale

Draw the following three value scales on the same sheet of paper:
• one plain gradient from 0 to 5; five being full value
• one using crosshatching from 0 to 5; five being full value
• one using a texture / style “treatment” of the student’s selection; from 0 to 5; five being full value

Perspective Grid

Create the following perspective grids
• basic 1 point
• basic 2 point
Overlay a piece of marker paper or tracing paper on your perspective grid (do not draw on the grid; only on the overlay)
Sketch boxes on the overlay by following the underlying grid
Submit your assignment to your instructor for review.

Final Part IV: Still Life Portfolio (Preparation)
At the end of this course; you are required to select your best still life sketches and assemble them into a still life portfolio. Please keep this in mind as you work and be sure to keep all sketches throughout the duration of this course. (See your instructor for details as needed).

Find a dollar bill and crumple it if it is not already crumpled.
The dollar bill will be the reference for your sketch.

Botanical Field Study
Due: 7
The Grand Canyon University campus has a variety of desert flora and fauna. For this assignment; you will walk around and sketch the plants found on campus.
For this assignment; complete the following:
• Layout a grid of squares on your large sketchpad of 12 squares. (Do this twice on two separate sheets of paper for a total of 24 squares) Each square on the grid should be at least one half inch from the other square (see your instructor for details)
• Walk around campus and look for plants
• Complete 12 gesture sketches of found plants (place sketches on the grid you created earlier).
• Complete 12 detailed sketches of the same 12 plants (place sketches on the grid you created earlier).

The Owl Turnaround

In class assignment: Create a three-point character turnaround using a simple animal; “the owl.”
Draw Front; side; and three-quarter views in the top third of your layout with a detailed three-quarter view sketch in the bottom two thirds of your layout.

Draw Your Lunch

Sketch your lunch before you start to eat it.
Draw from several different views use vanishing point
Then draw a detailed sketch from memory after you are done eating. (Do not refer to your "live" sketch of your lunch.)

Conceptualize a character made up of two or more fused characters or themes. (See instructor for details)

For this assignment; you will complete a quad color themed layout of four still life sketches on a single page using four different color schemes (e.g.; analogous; complementary; split complement; warm; cool; Triad; or quadratic) See instructor for layout details.

Final Part III: Still Life

Final Part IV: Still Life Portfolio

Select your best sketches from each of class and present them to instructor during last three s of class (Refine work as desired; try not to remove process; see instructor for details). You will need to select a minimum 16 pages of detailed work with two to six pages of process work or gesture sketches. Make an appointment with your instructor to review your portfolio during thirteen; fourteen; or fifteen.
