Course description

English 12 emphasizes a wide variety of texts; themes; and venues for learning in an array of course offerings. Students read; write; and analyze narrative and expository texts. They are expected to think critically about arguments; synthesize ideas from various texts; write with an effective style and voice; undertake independent research; and use a variety of strategies to communicate with others. Both their reading and writing should make students aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes; audience expectations; and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing. To meet the needs of the 21st century student; instruction is enhanced through a wide range of literature and media genres. Twelfth graders integrate content; thinking skills; and technology; as needed; to learn and communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences. English 12: Rhetoric and Literature; English 12: Media Literacy in the Digital Age; English 12: The Science of Science Fiction; English 12: War and Conflict; and English 12: Mystery - The Literature of Ideas; are the course options available at this level. The course outcomes are the same for all English 12 options. English 12: Media Literacy in the Digital Age provides students with a 1:1 laptop learning environment; and includes readings of literature; accessed digitally as well as in print form; and an exploration of documentaries; advertisements; editorials; and other digital content in addition to the required literature and writing outcomes for all English 12 courses.
