ourse Description:

BioScience2 offers students further study into topics learned in BioScience1 as well as be introduced to new concepts and skills. For example; students will be expected to maintain a culture of living organisms for the year. In addition; students will be required to read and present scientific papers to their peers; and they will be asked to design and conduct their own independent research project.

This is a laboratory course; therefore participation in these activities is crucial. Preparation by reading procedures and protocols is the key to students’ lab success. The labs will demonstrate experimental design; data acquisition; and basic statistical analysis. The labs in this course require science knowledge but also require a high level of skill (manipulating minute amounts of liquids; sterile technique; etc.). The lab experience is intended to challenge both intellect and skill.

In addition high school credit; BioScience 2 students are eligible to receive 3 credits through dual-enrollment in the University of Arizona’s Molecular and Cellular Biology Department.

Labs include:

· Identifying macromolecules (carbohydrates; lipids; proteins)

· Affects of pH on enzyme (catalase) function

· Affects of temperature on enzyme (catalase) function

· Using enzymes (amylase; cellulase) to alter fabric color

· Using a spectrophotometer to determine solution concentration (Beer’s Law)

· Comparing Biuret; Lowery; and Bradford assays

· Using fungal enzymes (cellobiase) to improve biofuel production

· Student-designed investigation—which fungi have the most cellobiase

· DNA barcoding of insects (including PCR and agarose electrophoresis review and)

· Bioinformatics search (BLAST) of insect barcode sequences

· Cell biology review (structure and function)

· Measuring human epithelial cell diameters

· Using cell diameter to plot normal distribution

· Plant anatomy/physiology overview

· Student-designed investigation—factors affect Wisconsin Fast Plant growth (poster presentation)

· Demonstrating Koch’s Postulates of disease transmission using yogurt and milk

· Alu Retrotransposon Lab using standard primers for PV92 locus

· Design primers loci other than PV92

· Chi-squared analysis of Alu data

· DNA quantification using UV-Vis spectrophotometer

· Chicken wing dissection

· SDS-PAGE electrophoresis of chicken proteins

· Starting; maintaining; passaging and freezing bacteria-free yeast culture

· Using a hemocytometer to determine cell density

· Using a spectrophotometer to determine cell density
