Course title
03059YPre-requisite
ChemistryCourse description
In Genetics and Biotechnology; students will learn the skills that will enable them to apply scientific skills and processes on major biotechnological science concepts; including DNA extraction and identification; molecular biology of cancer; immunology; population and behavioral genetics.
Students will demonstrate ways of acting and thinking inherent to the practice of science by using the language and instruments of science to collect; organize; interpret; calculate and communicate information through labs. Students will engage in multifaceted explorations and investigations from extracting their very own DNA to cloning plants to making bacteria glow in the dark. Additionally; students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the main concepts of genetics and biotechnology on assigned projects; quizzes and unit tests.
Upon completing this course students should be able to identify and explain the cell cycle and cancer; DNA/RNA structure and functions; gene transmission; expression and regulation; mutation and genetic variation; construction and variation of clones; and the applications of biotechnology. Students should also develop research skills; writing skills and independent thinking skills; all of which may be applied to several other courses.
